Summer Kickoff Festival

CSU’s Housing & Dining Services department put on a “Summer kickoff festival” today. They shut down the dining halls and made everyone eat outside. It was about a 5 on the “Hey, at least I’m not eating in the dorms” scale.

Coincidentally, it was absolutely beautiful outside today. Some grey clouds threatened to pour buckets on us like they did earlier this week, but they just barely missed us. Stuff is flowering all over the place. We have freaking purple trees outside:

(I posted this album to Flickr. I haven’t decided between Flickr, Picasa Web Albums, and my own self-hosted image gallery yet 😛 )

Snowy Day

It snowed today, and I got my first chance to break in the new Canon.

Snowy Day

I’m trying to decide where I want to upload my photos now that I’ll be taking them more often. This album is done with Picasa Web Albums, which is the easiest solution (I use Picasa on my computer). I’m also looking at Flickr or my already-existing image gallery app on my own website.

So far, I’m surprised with the quality this thing kicks out- definitely leaps and bounds better than my tiny Kodak point-and-shoot, even though it isn’t a DSLR or anything. My only complaint so far is that the on-camera LCD screen is too low-resolution and small for me to tell if a photo turned out well – they all look crappy, and then I look at them on my computer monitor and my jaw drops.

I have to sit down for a few more hours with the manual to take in all of the new features, and a few more months beyond that to actually learn them. But it should be fun, for sure- keep checking back here, I’ll be sure to post anything notable.

Canon PowerShot S3 IS

My Canon PowerShot S3 IS came. I love it.

I got it for three reasons:

  1. The vacationing in New Jersey and Belize this summer
  2. Constant frustration with noisy high-ISO shots from my point-and-shoot at concerts
  3. An urge to get out and take photos with at least some dedication. I can’t be a hardcore hobbyist, but I can try to improve some.

It was hard to decide between this camera, which is a fully manual consumer model, a super-compact point-and-shoot, or a low-end DSLR. I ended up with this because I already have a pretty decent compact camera, and I’m not ready for the training and monetary committment involved with DSLR cameras. This is a happy medium. With a 12X optical zoom lens and Image Stabilization.

I like my bass LOUDY, LOUDY, LOUDER!

Teh Spearhead was awesome.

The first night had the worst crowd ever. People have no sense of common courtesy any more. But the second night I got right up on the rail and had a much better time.

The Wailers (as in Bob Marley and the Wailers) were also there on Friday night… I really enjoyed hearing that music live. They had an awesome sound, and those songs are so fun to hear live… Especially stuff like “Trenchtown Rock,” “War,” and “Jammin’.”

‘Da Dorm

I finally took some pics of my dorm for all my out-of-state brethren to ooh and aah over:

So I looked at my schedule (yeesh! I have tests coming up!) and it looks like I might be coming down from the 22nd to the 24th of this month- as long as I can get someone to cover a shift at work. I miss Arizona, and it’s time for me to hang out down there again. So be warned, don’t leave on some huge adventure that weekend, or you’ll miss me.

Tonight I work the dreaded 8pm – Midnight shift at work. Blar.

Photos!

I was doing laundry today, and ran into my other SD card for my camera…. I popped it in, and there were a bunch of pictures of my AG friends in Arizona! It makes me miss all of the good times we’ve had.

I also have some (very few) pictures from CSU up… they’re all of the cool people on my floor in Corbett C3. I promise to take more later.

Better move my blog, too.

I figured with all of that moving jazz that I’m up to, I should move my blog!

I haven’t touched the old ZekeWeeks.com since last summer, and don’t really like how static it is. I also killed the photos.zekeweeks.com database, and didn’t feel like restoring Coppermine (I think it’s kinda clunky), so I put a new photo gallery script in, and integrated it with WordPress. Maybe that way more people will look at it.

So, to summarize:

  • My blog is now at www.ZekeWeeks.com, so don’t go to blog.zekeweeks.com anymore, unless you like my witty redirect message.
  • I have a photo gallery availiable in the right-hand sidebar. You can also find it at http://photos.zekeweeks.com.
  • I’m that bored. Can I move into the dorms already?
